An After Dark Tennis Match on Hallowe’en by Dave Scott

An After Dark Tennis Match on Hallowe’en

We met on court thirteen in dying light.
You brought a black cat, tied it to the net.
Some games they play out differently at night.

He brings me luck you said. Of course… alright,
I whispered, trying not to seem upset.
We played on court thirteen in dying light.

That’s not quite fair, I think. That’s not quite right,
…I also might have brought a lucky pet.
Some games they play out differently at night.

Adorned in gothic, black dyed tennis whites,
You win the toss, then win the game… the set.
We paused for breath beneath thirteen floodlights

………that
…………………………….Pop! …………..We
……………..Scream!
…………………You shrieked in sheer delight:
……………….Who needs the lights?
……………..Game on!
……………Don’t stop!
…………..Don’t
……….fret!

Some games, they play out differently at night.

The match, like day is done; I’m left in sight
of cats eyes. Game on, a small voice says.
We played on court thirteen, in dying light.
Some games they play out differently at night.

  1. I just saw this – what a brilliant poem for the occasion ! I particularly loved the imagery of the ghost in the middle as it emphasizes the fright factor the author I assume wants us to feel. Happy Halloween !
