Overthinking – Rachel Playforth

Charged with light
in the storm of your hair
electrostatic with no place to go
a buzz in the deep time of your brain
a thousand shocks.

Your next thought is the angel
rushing at terminal velocity
to where thousands gather on a pin
teetering on the rim
of a neuron.

The shiver of shortwave
in constant motion
right behind your sparkplug eyes
as you struggle for
the one breath you need.

Rachel is a librarian, writer and editor based in Sussex. Member of the Frogmore Press editorial board and co-editor of the wild swimming anthology Watermarks. She writes mostly about local landscapes, bodies and minds, love, and language. Recent poems in Envoi, Finished Creatures, Black Bough.
